Waterfall expedition: the Moulinet

Dean

A few minutes from the medieval town of Nozeroy, the Moulinet waterfall offers walkers a real break from freshness. Set in the middle of a forest, this resolutely magical site has a strong potential for seduction.

Here, time stops...

On the discreet Come Sandon (a tributary of the Ain which winds for just over four kilometers), it is difficult to imagine that one of the nuggets of the territory is nestled: the Moulinet waterfall. About ten meters high, the latter punctuates with panache the brief course of the small torrent, unfolding just before its confluence with the Ain. Surrounded by a cove and next to the ruins of an old mill, this waterfall, as spectacular as it is little known, gives off an almost magical atmosphere. Here, time stops and worries fade away, leaving the field open to the lapping of white water and the songs of birds.

From footbridges to viewpoints

The Moulinet waterfall is part of the Ain source hiking circuit. Completely rehabilitated in 2021, this route offers wanderers a loop of around ten kilometers, enhanced by two footbridges offering a privileged view of the Ain and the Serpentine – its little sister. A walk to discover without delay, especially as this exceptional site combines natural curiosities: the source of the Ain itself, of course, but also the Saut des Maillys or the Moulin du Saut...

To discover the Moulinet waterfall, two options are possible from the Ain source car park (Conte):

  • Complete the entire circuit in a loop: follow the hiking trail markers (9 km).
  • Just make a return trip to the waterfall: go down to the Saut des Maillys, then continue on the left to the Moulinet waterfall. Then retrace your steps to the parking lot.
