Waterfall expedition: the Langouette gorges

Planches-en-Montagne

Hidden in the heart of the Haute-Vallée de la Saine, the Langouette gorges offer a striking spectacle: in the hollow of a gorge of dizzying depth, the river bubbles with enthusiasm to give birth to giant pots and multiple waterfalls.

White water games guaranteed!

Tightened at the bottom of a narrow canyon forty meters high, the Langouette gorges impress as much by their abysmal drop in altitude as by the wildness and poetry of their setting. The scene of numerous light shows which illuminate the moss and ferns under the wooded cover, they give off a serene and mysterious atmosphere. Overlooking the gorge, the viewpoint allows you to appreciate the power of the water, which has shaped the bed of the river by sculpting capricious meanders. Tumultuous and unpredictable, the little Saine defies all obstacles before confluence with the Ain river, a few kilometers downstream.

A timeless parenthesis...

Throughout the site, a laid-out path (walkways, belvederes, etc.) offers the possibility of safely appreciating the charm of the place before witnessing the “final bouquet”: the shattering fall of a ten-meter-high waterfall , which formerly allowed the operation of a hydroelectric power station. Let yourself be transported along the water, for a resolutely timeless break, conducive to recharging your batteries.

To extend the ride...

Don’t leave the Haute-Vallée de la Saine too quickly! It is home to many other gems, including the surprising Malvaux gorges... Their panorama can be admired by taking an old tramway line which linked Champagnole to Foncine-le-Bas, and which operated until 1950.

Access from Les Planches-en-Montagne or Foncine-le-Bas.
