The Saint-Germain l'Auxerrois church and the Notre-Dame hermitage

Mieges

Church of Saint-Germain l'Auxerrois

The Saint-Germain l'Auxerrois church in Mièges, remarkable for its architecture and the blondness of its stone (the famous "yellow stone" from the old quarries of Molpré), stands out in the village landscape. Formerly topped by a double dome which was the victim of a fire in 1839, its bell tower has since its restoration presented an unusual roof terrace in the area, surrounded by four statues. The building, which houses important furniture dating from the end of the Middle Ages, has numerous decorative elements in Gothic and Renaissance styles.

Created in 2022 with the aim of promoting and raising awareness among residents and visitors alike of the built and natural treasures of the surrounding area, the association “Val de Mièges, safeguarding and promoting heritage” works in particular for the preservation and restoration of this monument, in offering guided tours and various activities.

The Notre-Dame hermitage

The Notre-Dame de Mièges hermitage, a Jura center of religious worship, is located in the immediate vicinity of the Cluniac priory.

Concerning its origin, it is said that in the 15th century, a knight quenching his thirst at the source of Mièges (the “Sainte Fontaine”) would have seen a statue – the Virgin of Montaigu. He carried the sculpture to the Saint-Germain l'Auxerrois church... but the next day, it had found its place. An oratory was then built there to place the Virgin, then a chapel, where a hermit established himself in 1613. From then on, the hermitage attracted many pilgrims, and several miraculous healings were recognized there, including that of a blind child. Today, two pilgrimages continue to bring together the faithful from the canton and surrounding areas in Mièges – the first takes place in the spring, the second in the fall.
