Gourmet route n°6

Pont-du-Navoy > Marigny > Saffloz

In the southwest of the Champagnole Nozeroy Jura territory (around the famous Lake Chalain), this gourmet itinerary in four stages will thrill the taste buds with its delicious local products...

The County Chalet

First stop: Chalet du Comté, in the town of Pont-du-Navoy. It is here that the cheesemakers of the Jura Terroir fruit producer manufacture and refine numerous wheels of Comté on a daily basis.

Of particularly monitored quality, the milk collected every day from surrounding farms is transformed here to obtain an excellent cheese. The cooperative also obtained the silver medal at the Concours Général Agricole de Paris 2019 for its County. It offers four varieties: sweet, fruity, “aged over 18 months” as well as a certified organic Comté.

In addition to the essential Comté, there are various Franche-Comté cheese specialties: Morbier, Bleu de Gex, Mont d'Or (autumn and winter), raclette, pressed tomme... Other "local" products, from local artisanal businesses, complete the display: dairy products and cold meats of all kinds, but also Jura wines, traditional lemonades, fruit juices, honey, jams...

The Pernet-Thévenin House

On the other side of the road is the Maison Pernet-Thévenin, created in 1904 by Francis Thévenin, and run today by siblings: Véronique, Stéphane, Hervé and Loïc make up the 4rd generation of the “Pernet-Thévenin” family at the head of the company.

The bottling of wines and drinks distributed to restaurateurs and individuals is mainly carried out on the Pont-du-Navoy site. The company thus supplies numerous AOP and IGP wines, French Table Wines, sparkling wines as well as flavored wine-based drinks. The latter were created in 2008 by Maison Pernet-Thévenin, which offers its own range – “Le Navoy”.

These very original cocktails are made using the combination of wine and an artisanal fruit syrup. Around 1 hectoliters are 200+ produced each year and more than twenty different flavors are on the menu! So… Are you more fig-white or pear-white? Chestnut rosé or cherry rosé? Sangria or mulled wine?…

The Domaine des Aronias

The route continues to Villard-sur-Ain where the Domaine des Aronias is located, an organic farming operation (Ecocert certified) specializing in the cultivation and use of aronia berries. Originally from North America, these were nicknamed “the healing berries” and have very specific properties which are said to strengthen the immune and cardiovascular systems.

Since 2018, Diana and Michel Paciel have welcomed visitors and introduced them to their work. The plantation covers an area of approximately 4 hectares, on which more than 6 aronia bushes have been planted. Concerned about the quality of their products, Diana and Michel strive to maintain a human-scale operation, and apply a processing method which allows the many properties of these small black fruits to be preserved.

After the harvest, the production is entirely transformed at the heart of the farm, in order to be dehydrated or packaged in the form of powder, fruit juice, jelly or herbal tea. Occasionally, candies and fruit jellies are also made on site.

On request, it is also possible to visit the plantation and discover the facilities set up by the operators before punctuating this discovery with a tasting.

Jurbee

To complete this gourmet itinerary, head to Saffloz, where the Jurbee company is established. Today, the two partners Maxime Colombet and Olivier Verjus produce around 20 tonnes of honey each year. With more than 600 hives spread across the Jura massif, the two beekeepers produce excellent Jura honeys – flowers, acacia, lime, fir and mountain – as well as other hive products such as honey candies, honey bread. spice, royal jelly, pollen or even propolis, to chew or in capsules.

As true enthusiasts, Olivier and Maxime work every day to perpetuate the tradition; Acacia and flower honeys are thus generated at low altitude, in the Jura plain, while those from fir, linden and mountain are produced from hives located on the Jura plateaus.

So head quickly to Saffloz, to discover all these delicacies in the farm's small shop! The honey house can be visited on request. Although they are sold on site, Jurbee's flagship products are also distributed in numerous points of sale in Jura and Doubs.
