Otto's Tower

Pets

It was in 986 that the County of Burgundy, also called Franche-Comté de Bourgogne, was founded by Count Otte-Guillaume of Burgundy. During the XNUMXth century, following a conflict between him and two other lords, Otto II ordered the construction of a fortified castle in Montrond, which would serve in particular to protect one of the major towns in the region: Poligny.

In 1479, Charles the Bold, last Valois Duke of Burgundy, was killed during the Battle of Nancy. The fortress was then dismantled by the troops of King Louis XI, while the castellany fell into the hands of the Prince of Orange, an ally of the sovereign. During the 1981th and XNUMXth centuries, residents were allowed to take stones from the building. The site is gradually falling into oblivion, now watched over only by Otto's tower... part of which collapsed in XNUMX.

Listed as a Historic Monument since May 1986, the site is now the subject of all the care of the La Tour d'Otton association, which strives to organize restoration campaigns and introduce this heritage to as many people as possible. exceptional medieval.
